Gate Valve:
A gate valve is a valve in which the closing member (gate) moves vertically along the axis of the passage. It is mainly used to shut off the medium in the pipeline, i.e., fully open or fully closed. Generally, gate valves cannot be used to regulate flow. They can be used for low-temperature and low-pressure or high-temperature and high-pressure applications, and different materials can be used depending on the valve. However, gate valves are generally not used in pipelines transporting slurries, etc.
Advantages: ①Small fluid resistance; ②Small torque required for opening and closing; ③Can be used in ring-main pipelines with bidirectional fluid flow, i.e., the flow direction of the medium is unrestricted; ④When fully open, the sealing surface is less scoured by the working medium than a globe valve; ⑤The body structure is relatively simple, and the manufacturing process is better; ⑥The structural length is shorter.
Disadvantages: ①Larger external dimensions and opening height, and larger installation space required; ②During the opening and closing process, the sealing surface friction is relatively large, and the wear is large, and it is easy to cause scratches even at high temperatures; ③Gate valves generally have two sealing surfaces, which increases the difficulty of processing, polishing, and maintenance; ④Long opening and closing time.
Butterfly Valve:
A butterfly valve is a valve that uses a disc-type closing member to open, close, and regulate the fluid passage by reciprocating movement of approximately 90°.
Advantages: ①Simple structure, small size, light weight, low material consumption, suitable for large-diameter valves; ②Fast opening and closing, low flow resistance; ③Can be used for media containing suspended solid particles, and can also be used for powdery and granular media depending on the strength of the sealing surface. It can be used for bidirectional opening and closing and regulation of ventilation and dust removal pipelines, and is widely used in metallurgical, light industry, power, and petrochemical systems' gas pipelines and waterways.
Disadvantages: ①The flow regulation range is not large. When the opening reaches 30%, the flow will reach more than 95%. ②Due to the limitations of the butterfly valve structure and sealing materials, it is not suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure pipeline systems. The general operating temperature is below 300℃, and PN40 or less. ③The sealing performance is worse than that of ball valves and globe valves, so it is used where the sealing requirements are not very high.
